There is a lot of confusion out there regarding the new OSHA respirable silica exposure standard, Omega wants to clarify how this new requirement will affect plastering contractors. In short it does! Many plastering contractors believe they are exempt, but the reality is traditional plastering is a target of OSHA. Traditional plaster (cement-based stucco finish, three coat scratch and brown, and one coat) all are made from cement and silica sand, which have trace amounts of respirable silica. OSHA knows this and if they see any dust on your jobsite, they will ask for proof you are complying with the exposure standard. Crack Isolation System

Crack Isolation System is designed to mitigate surface cracking in new and existing plaster systems by integrating woven fiberglass mesh into the base coat prior to applying the finish. The Crack Isolation System can either embed the mesh directly into the wet brown coat or embed mesh into an acrylic modified base coat over the existing plaster base coat or finish. When properly installed, this mesh reinforces the stucco and helps to reduce the appearance of cracks. It is an excellent choice to repair stucco cracking on existing walls.

In the plastering industry, the word “efflorescence” refers to the crystalline deposit, usually white, that may develop on the surface of portland cement plaster walls. Efflorescence is the end result of water dissolving the salts that are naturally present within cement-based products. This salt solution migrates to the finished surface and a salt deposit remains after the water evaporates.
